Weekly Reflection #2

Quinlan Kerr  Senior Project  Kelly Griffen-Brown  11/22/22  Weekly Reflection I have now concluded my second week at the Country Club of New Hampshire with Liam, Derek, and the whole staff at the course. This week, I learned a lot and have a bunch of new experiences. I really enjoyed this week and it was a mix of emotions as I finish up my senior project, both happy and sad.  A huge life lesson I learned here at the course is one that wasn’t told to me directly or had anything to do with golf. This lesson is you get what you receive. The staff members at the course are so nice and supportive of us. Rocky, the bartender, played high-level hockey when he was younger so he loves to talk sports with us. He also gave us a 50% discount every time we got food there. This is just one example, genuinely everyone on the course I’ve met from maintenance to clubhouse has shown me kindness and gratitude.  This week I did a ton of new things but a big thing...

Blog Post #11 5/20/22 Hours Earned: 5.5 Total Hours: 51 Today on the course we worked with Pat one of my favorite staff members. Liam and I took out a cart and followed Pat around the course. As we did we talked with Pat about maintenance, the course, and just life in general. We worked on Bunker management today. Obviously when golfers go into the sand they are supposed to rake it out nicely, but this doesn't always happen. He showed us how to use his cart with the back brush and fix the bunkers.  We also washed carts when we were done.  Me washing carts.

Blog Post #12 5/21/22 Hours Earned: 5 Total Hours: 56 Today we met a new staff member, Sam. He works in the kitchen and today he specifically was running the grill. The kitchen inside the clubhouse closed down so Sam was the only source of food for the golfers at the club. On the grills they make burgers, hotdogs, sausages, beans, potato salad, and corn. It was cool to see how the golfers migrated from inside to outside because of how nice it was outside. Liam helped set up and grill while I motivated from the sidelines. Liam and Sam.  Me observing from the side.

Blog Post #10 5/19/22 Hours Earned: 5.5 Total Hours: 45.5  Today the big thing I accomplished was my first day of putting. I felt good enough to stand with the crutches and swing my arms to putt. Liam’s friend Jacob came to the course today too. We played games on the putting green and it felt good to be able to participate in them. Games like fewest shots to put a certain hole; I also tried to chip but I was unsuccessful in doing so. Us at lunch. The glizzy grubbage.

Blog Post #9 5/18/22 Hours Earned: 3.5 Total Hours: 40  Today Liam and I worked with Becca. Becca is a bartender here and also one of the Beverage cart girls. Becca was going out as the Bev Cart girl today and before that we got to see the prep time it takes to get the cart ready. She has to grab a ton of ice and obviously all the drinks. Then we went with her to see what it was like. Then we ended the day in the pro shop with Derek, Rocky, and Mark. View from Hole 9.

Blog Post #8 5/17/22 Hours Earned: 5.5 Total Hours: 36.5 We started the day doing maintenance work with Carl. We learned how to and why they wash the batteries of the golf carts.  We also learned how to charge the carts and the types of carts they have at the course. Then Jack Robbie, Meg Patrick, and Nat Daniels came to play a round of 9 with us. We ended the day talking about what we were looking forward to tomorrow and checking in with Rocky at the bar. Liam and Rocky at the bar.

Reflection

Quinlan Kerr  Senior Project  Kelly Griffen-Brown  11/16/22  Weekly Reflection  In my first week of senior project, I began my “internship” at the Country Club of New Hampshire with Liam Chapman. I learned a bunch of new things and new people. As I continue to get older I begin to realize the advantage of knowing different people and learning through others' experiences. At the course this week I was able to have a ton of fun and learn at the same time.  The first thing I noticed while at the course was not actually related to golf.  At the golf course, we always drive around the course and chat with golfers. As I have done that and just being around the course I have seen the Proctor connection in full effect. So many people I have talked to have some sort of connection to Proctor. Whether they went to Proctor themselves, their child went, or they have a friend/family member who works at Proctor. I learned how impactful the Proctor connection can ...

Blog Post #7 5/16/22 Hours Earned: 5 Total Hours: 31 This was a typical day so far. We took out the golf ball picker-upper and cleaned up the driving range. It’s pretty fun going around the range but Liam can’t go too fast because then the balls just shoot up instead of being picked up. We then parked the vehicle and began to unload the balls. There are a bunch of different baskets where the balls get collected; you then have to put all the balls you get into the ball cleaner. After this, you go dump all the now freshly cleaned balls into the driving range ball dispenser, and that's how you pick up a driving range.

Blog Post #4 5/11/22 Hours Earned: 5.5 Total Hours: 19  On my fourth day of senior project with Liam, we again found ourselves at the Country Club of New Hampshire in the morning. We started in the clubhouse talking with Derek and meeting new staff members. As summer begins to pick up the course gets more and more packed every day so more employees have started working again. Today Spanky one of the employees there showed us how to run the golfball-picker-upper so we could do it by ourselves. We used it on the range to collect the balls. I also got to say hi to Jim on the range before we went back into the clubhouse to talk to Jen. Those were my highlights of the day as riding in the golf cart isn’t always too comfortable for my knee.  Video of inside the goofball picker-upper on the range.      Video of Spanky showing us how to clean the balls we pick up from the range.

Blog Post #6 5/13/22 Hours Earned: 2 Total Hours: 26 Throughout senior project, I have seen the effect of the Proctor connection. Today Chap and I took a lap around the course to begin the day and chatted with some golfers as we went around. Often, when you are driving around the course, people will be hitting, so it is only polite to stop and wait for them to take their swing. This leads us to stop a lot and when we do many times we will chat with the golfers if they want to talk. We have already met so many people who have some connection to Proctor. Whether that is if they went themselves, if their kid went, or if they have a friend who works there. It’s cool to see how many people think fondly of the school. A photo from my spot on the cart where I spend most my time.

Blog Post #5 5/13/22 Hours Earned: 5 Total Hours: 24 Today was a pretty standard day on the course as we continue to pick up in the golf season. There still aren’t too many people on the course though. We first get to the clubhouse and talk with Derek and the staff. We then take a cart around and chat with golfers building networks and meeting new people. Then we went and cleaned our cart and others, and I did my best to help. I then ended before media day by observing a round of golf. The Driving Range.

Blog Post #3 5/11/22 Hours Earned: 5.5 Total Hours: 13.5  On the third day this was our first day “playing” the course. I of course just sat in the cart and observed Liam play 18, but it was nice to learn about golf etiquette. Watching others and talking with the guys from the course I was able to learn about good sportsmanship on the course. It is very important to be quiet when people are swinging and also you have to make sure to always be polite. We also at the end of the round learned how to clean the carts. Joe showed us how to use the hose and spray down the cart. It was a great third day on the course!  Liam raking out the sand trap.

Blog Post #2 5/10/22 Hours Earned: 5 Total Hours: 8  On our second day, we could do more around the course. When we first arrived, we were greeted by more staff members who weren’t there yesterday. We met Rocky, Pat, and Joe. Pat and Joe work with maintenance and we will be working with them both over the next two weeks. We then got to take a golf cart and drive around the 18 holes and check out the lay of the land. While we did this though we chatted with many locals and worked on our golf etiquette. After that, Joe showed us how to patch divots on the range and I helped Liam and Joe as I could. And to finish the day we chatted with Derek about what our next steps were and we were able to get some nice company merchandise. I got a red Country Club of New Hampshire golf tee and Liam got white to make us official interns. Pond on the back 9. View of the clubhouse from the course.

Blog Post #1  5/9/22 Hours Earned: 3  Total Hours 3  Today was Liam and I’s first day of senior project. We got to the course in the afternoon and met Derek our mentor. He is a golf pro and runs the Country Club of New England. We got to check out the course a little on the first day, but we mainly met the people we’d be working with for the next two weeks. We met the guys who worked in the shop like Mark and then we talked with Derek for a while planning out our project.    View of the clubhouse from the street. Awards and photos from the clubhouse.  We were able to talk with Derek and get more of an understanding of what we would do during this time. The first day of senior project was a success and I can’t wait to see what this project holds.
